Like car insurance, there are several different types of motorcycle insurance. Depending on which state you live in, the law requires motorcyclists to have a specific type of motorcycle insurance coverage even before they ride a new bike off the sales floor or lot.
The four common types of motorcycle insurance options include liability coverage, collision coverage, comprehensive coverage, and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. Liability coverage only covers the other people involved, if you have an accident. It covers bodily injury and property damage to others; you and your bike are not covered under this type of motorcycle insurance option. Collision coverage insures the owner if he/she is involved in an accident involving another vehicle or an object. Comprehensive coverage insures the motorcyclists against any damages caused by an event other than collision (i.e., theft). Collision coverage and comprehensive coverage will usually cover the blue book value of the motorcycle.
Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage covers you in case another driver or person involved in the accident does not have any or enough insurance to cover your damages. Uninsured/underinsured coverage typically pays for damages such as medical treatment and lost wages. It may also include payments for property damage, depending on the policy.
