Switching Insurance Agents

Let’s say your insurance agent does not provide you with the information you requested (or worse yet, the wrong information); or let’s say your insurance agent sighs on the phone and speaks in an ill-mannered tone to you. You do not need to tolerate such behavior, and really, you should not tolerate it. If you would like to remain with your current insurance agency, but you prefer to work with a different agent, all you have to do is call your insurance carrier’s corporate office to make the request or write a letter requesting a switch. Most, if not all, insurance companies’ websites include contact information for their corporate offices.

If you would like a new agent and a new insurance company, it may take a bit more work on your part. To switch insurance carriers, the first thing you should do is shop and compare quotes. This is easy to do here on AutoCarInsurance.org, where you could start by simply entering your zip code above. After filling the short form, you will receive anywhere from 5 to 8 free quotes from reputable insurance companies (names you recognize in the insurance industry).

Once you have decided on a new carrier, completed all paperwork, and the new policy has a start date, you will have to cancel your existing policy in writing. When canceling in writing, be sure to include the date that your current policy should be cancelled. If your existing policy is not up for renewal, there may be a penalty for canceling. So if you want to save money, plan on switching insurance carriers around the same time that your policy is up for renewal, with the same start date as your current policy’s end date.

It is important to note that if you do not go through the proper procedures to cancel your existing insurance policy and your insurance carrier continues to bill you, this could have a negative impact on your credit rating. Keep in mind that all it takes is a day to switch insurance carriers once you have selected a new insurance company.
