Driving Schools

Although the are several different types of driving schools in operation today such as truck driving schools, bus driving schools, and defensive driving schools, traffic driving schools are the most popular type of driving school in existence today. Traffic driving schools are operated by the state (DMV) or are independently owned.

In general, a driving school that is not operated by the state consists of:

• Any person licensed by the state’s department of motor vehicles to teach driving for compensation or in preparation for the state driver's licensing test.
• A driving school operator (owner or manager).
• At least one driving instructor who is an employee of a driving school licensed by the state’s department of motor vehicles. 
• An independent driving instructor who is licensed by the state’s department of motor vehicles to teach driving in the state in which he/she resides.
  

Traffic driving schools teach individuals how to drive, the rules of the road, and how to drive safely. They can also help individuals who may find themselves with too many traffic tickets. By taking a traffic driving school course, an individual whose license is in poor standing can reduce the number of “bad” points on his/her license.

Defensive driving schools serve several purposes as well, but in many cases, attending defensive driving school is court ordered. Defensive driving schools typically teach drivers who have had a higher than usual number of traffic violations (or severe violations) how to become safe drivers. If court ordered, the course will satisfy the violation. In some cases, defensive driving schools will also offer driving programs for teens that are designed to help make them better, safer drivers.

If you have been ordered to take a class at a defensive driving school, you will need to take the following items with you:

• A copy of your traffic ticket.
• Your driver’s license. 
• Any paperwork or documentation you may have received from the court. 
• Notebook and pen to jot down important information.
